Whether you want to design high-performance sound systems, perform business analysis for a leading financial services company, test aircraft engines, or develop materials for cutting-edge biomedical devices, you can do it now! You can work for an entrepreneurial start-up company in metro Atlanta, a government agency in Washington DC, or a nationally-renowned Fortune 500 Company in Silicon Valley or even Shanghai.

The Undergraduate Professional Internship (UPI) Program provides students with real-world work experience directly related to their major at over 1,000 companies across the United States and beyond.
Internships help students make career decisions, develop professional and personal skills, begin the process of networking early, and build their resume. Internships provide students with a competitive edge in today’s constantly evolving workplace.
The UPI Program provides employers with an excellent pool of well-prepared employees, enhances their personnel selection process by using on-the-job performance as a basis for permanent hiring, and contributes to workforce diversity through access to a large and diverse pool of top-notch applicants.
What Jobs Qualify as Undergraduate Professional Internships?
- Professional internships must be related to a student’s major. In addition to major-related internships, our Service Learning program allows students to intern for a non-profit or other civic organization.
- Paid or Voluntary
- Most internships span a single semester (Spring, Summer or Fall). However students can work multiple internships with the same or different companies. Back-to-Back spring-summer or summer-fall internship assignments are allowed.
- Part-time Spend less time in the classroom, mMaintain your full-time student status, eEarn special recognition on your transcript, work PART-TIME in your major field.
Work 20 – 29 hours per week, take 6 Internship credits + 6 credit hours in the classroom.
Work 30 – 34 hours per week, take 9 Internship credits + 3 credit hours in the classroom.
Working 35+ hours per week = Full-time internship
No charge for Internship credit courses. - Work term length is typically 12-14 weeks for summer and 16-18 weeks for spring or fall.

P2D2, our comprehensive job database, is a great tool to match students with employers. In order to utilize this job database and the other services provided by our office, students need to apply to the UPI Program. We accept applications on an on-going basis from all majors at Georgia Tech. Making Your Internship Official:
Professional interns maintain their full-time student status by registering for an audited internship course (http://www.upi.gatech.edu/registration.php). Maintaining full-time status is critical for housing, insurance and eligibility purposes. In addition, this course allows the internship to be officially recognized by the University on the student’s transcript and prevents any gaps in enrollment.
The number of audit credits depends upon the number of hours worked per week (20-29 hours = 6 audit credits, 30-34 hours = 9 audit credits, 35+ hours = 12 audit credits). Students participating in a part-time internship must maintain full-time student status using a combination of internship and academic credit.
